True Vet Emergencies

A good basic rule to follow is ...When in doubt take your dragon to a qualified reptile veterinarian immediately. Reptiles hide illness very well. It's a survival tactic. By the time a keeper is aware that there is a problem..it's a BIG problem! Dragons go downhill quickly, and the sooner they are treated by a vet, the sooner they will recover. (Keep in mind that reptiles heal much more slowly than warm blooded animals.) The following is a list of TRUE vet emergencies. If you encounter any of these these conditions, follow the action described.
*************************************************************

BLEEDING: Control bleeding as best you can with direct pressure. Do not attempt to fashion a tourniquet as these can cause serious injury if not used correctly. Transport dragon to vet IMMEDIATELY. Minor bleeding from a nail clipped too short can be controlled by using a styptic product like Kwik-Stop, which can be found in the bird section of any pet supply store.

TWITCHING, SEIZURES OR CONVULSIONS: Keep the dragon warm, and as quite as possible. Transport to vet IMMEDIATELY.

EYE INJURIES: Protect the eye, and transport dragon to vet IMMEDIATELY

GASPING: Gaping is normal, gasping is serious! Transport to vet IMMEDIATELY.

EVISCERATION: (internal organs outside the body cavity) Wrap dragon's body in moist clean cloth. Transport to vet IMMEDIATELY.

BROKEN BONES: If accompanied by open wounds, cover the wounds with moist clean cloth. Stabilize suspected fracture as best you can, and transport the dragon to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

PROLAPSE: This refers to internal tissues that are protruding outside the dragon's vent. Cover the tissue with moist clean cloth, and transport the dragon to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

BROKEN BACK: If you suspect your dragon has sustained a broken back...IMMOBILIZE by wrapping the dragon in a towel, and transport the dragon to the vet IMMEIDATELY.

BURNS: Unless experienced in judging the seriousness of the burn, transport the dragon to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

LUMPS AND BUMPS: This could be anything. Don't take a wait and see attitude. Transport the dragon to the vet ASAP.

VOMITING: Dragon may have ingested poison or there may be another problem. If you think the dragon has eaten something poisonous, take the suspected substance with you. Transport to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

DIARRHEA: This could be a sign of parasites or illness. If possible, take a sample of the stool, (in a plastic bag) and the dragon to the vet ASAP.

MITES AND TICKS: These ectoparasites feast on the dragon's blood. If the infestation is large, the dragon may be seriosuly anemic. Don't bother using the junk sold in pet supply stores. Get the dragon to the vet ASAP.

EGG BINDING (DYSTOCIA): If you suspect the dragon is eggbound...transport to the vet IMMEDIATELY. SYMPTOMS:
The symptoms of egg-binding include lethargy, depression, and non-responsiveness.
