So, you're building a new lair, or just wanting to add some cool rocks or basking logs to your current one. GREAT idea! But, now you find yourself wondering what woods, and types of stone are safe to use. Don't think you're the only one! Here's a partial list to help you out.
GOOD WOODS
ALDER
ASH
ASPEN
BIRCH
COTTONWOOD
DOGWOOD
ELM
MAPLE
OAK
POPLAR
SYCAMORE
WILLOW
DRIED GRAPE VINE
And all professionally-prepared woods that you find in herp and/or aquarium supply stores should be fine.
BAD WOODS
ALMOND
APRICOT
BLACKLOCUST
BUCKEYE
BUTTERNUT
CEDAR
CHERRY
EUCALYPTUS
HORSECHESTNUT
JUNIPER
MELALEUCA
MAHOGANY
NECTARINE
NIGHTSHADE
OLEANDER
PECAN
PEPPER
PINE
PLUM
PRUNE
REDWOOD
SANDALWOOD
YEW
Also avoid chemically the chemically treated woods used in the contstruction and/or landscaping fields.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rock list is a little harder to lay out item by item. For the most part, any hard, dense stone should work well. There are softer stones ( like mica or talc) that should be avoided, and some stones are actually toxic....like bright-yellow sulfur, green tobernite, sparkly chrysotile, or red cinnabar. LAVA rocks can cause LEAD POISONING. Don't use a stone simply because it's pretty. If you don't know if it's safe, find something else! Following are some safe types of rock. NOTE: Be sure that all cage "furniture" is sitting solidly on the bottom of the tank, so that digging dragons can't undermine them, and get injured...or worse.
GOOD STONES
BASALT
GEODES (if cracked, watch for sharp edges)
GRANITE
MARBLE
OBSIDIAN (watch for sharp edges)
PETRIFIED WOOD
QUARTZ (watch for sharp edges)
RHYOLITE
SCHIST
SERPENTINE
SHALE (thick)
SLATE
TUFF
Have FUN building or equipping the lair, Keeper! |
